Sir Robin Wales, the Mayor of Newham, welcomed the Government's announcement that Crossrail will go ahead. He said, "Crossrail will mean not just quicker and less crowded journeys for residents to central London and it will also vastly improve accessibility to the borough’s key development sites.”

Newham will be one of the main beneficiaries of the £16 billion Crossrail scheme that will connect east and west London, with stations planned for Custom House, Stratford, Maryland, Forest Gate and Manor Park. It will bring an additional one and a half million people to within 60 minutes of London's key business areas and is expected to carry 200m passenger a year.

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, said, “I believe this is a project of enormous importance not just for London but for the whole country. By generating an additional 30,000 jobs and helping London retain its position as the world's pre-eminent financial centre, it will support Britain's economic growth and maintain Britain's position as a leading world economy. And by delivering quicker journeys from some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of the city to the most economically important, it will support regeneration particularly in the most deprived parts of our country."
