Labour’s Mayor of Newham, Robin Wales, was present as the John Lewis department store held its Topping Out ceremony.

Westfield Stratford City, adjacent to the Olympic Park in Newham, reached new heights last week (Friday 3 July) with the Topping Out of the latest John Lewis department store.

The event saw an employment charter signed by various parties which commits the store to delivering jobs for local people.

Speaking from the ceremony, Robin said:

"Jobs, skills development and education are vitally important for the future of the borough and I'm pleased to see John Lewis get on board and sign up to the employment pledge which will provide much needed jobs for local people in the future. The city of London continues to move east and Newham is at the heart of this change.

"Westfield Stratford City, the 2012 site, new transport infrastructure and the Canning Town & Custom House regeneration programs all send a powerful signal that Newham means business. These projects represent a once in lifetime opportunity to turnaround the prospects of residents and we're determined to get a better deal for them."
