My
work as a parish priest living and working in East Ham gives me a daily insight
into the lives of vast variety of people in my local community. I regularly
visit local schools, meet with the safer
neighbourhood team and local residents groups to discuss issues in the East Ham
area. It is through my interaction with local people that I believe I can
effectively represent them as a councillor.
I
believe that education and employment gives us choices in life and a means of
reducing poverty within communities. My belief in the value of education has
led me to be involved in children’s services since being elected onto the
council in 1997. I am now Lead member for Children’s Services and Chair of
Newham’s Children’s Trust.
I am also:
- Chair
the Governing Body at Vicarage Primary School. I regularly take assemblies in
school and am involved in using £8 million pounds to expand and improve the
facilities in the school over the next few years.
- On
the Governing Body of Langdon Secondary School
- On
the governing body of Newham College for Further Education which with the
secondary schools has introduced the most successful diploma programme for
14-19 years olds in the country.
Yet
the achievement of the Labour Party of which I am the most proud is the
investment in Early Years. I have chaired the Early and Childcare Development
Partnership for the past ten years. We have enabled the creation of over 4000
childcare places in a variety of early years’ settings. We have built 20 Children’s Centres across
the borough.
