Andrew Baikie was born in Somerset, but has lived in London since 1973, and Newham since 1975. He holds a Chemistry degree from Queen Mary College, University of London. He has worked for the former Ever-Ready battery company, the Civil Service, and the precious metals industry.
A Councillor since July 1992, Andrew has held various positions as an elected member within the Council, although his main interest is housing. Andrew has played a leading role in development of the Council's current Choice Based Housing Allocation System, and believes that it has not only lead to greater simplicity and transparency in the allocation of social housing in the Borough, but also been influential in changing Government thinking in this area of housing.
Andrew has also played a leading role in driving down costs and finding efficiencies within the Council's operations, a factor behind the 0% Council Tax increases in the last two years'.
As a local member in Little Ilford he played a leading role in the successful campaign to keep open the Little Ilford sub-post office in Walton Road.
However he is not complacent, and realises that there is always more to be done in moving the Borough and the area forward.
