Amarjit has been a Councillor since 1978. He has always represented Manor Park ward where he lives with his family.
He has extensive management experience gained through his job as a project
manager, through work in the local community, activity in the Labour
Party and his Trade Union and through his committee work on
Newham Council.
Amarjit is a Sikh. He was the first Asian Councillor and the first Asian civic Mayor in Newham. This has given him a practical insight into the importance of equal
opportunities, and the qualities and determination needed to turn policy and
good intentions into practice. Amarjit believes that equal opportunities are the ability to
recognise people’s differences in order to provide them with the same
opportunities.
Amarjit is well versed with ensuring value for money through his job as a project
manager, his political activities as a council committee chair and as a former
chair of school governors.
As a local resident he
cares about the area where he lives in and the issues facing the people who live
there. The issues that concern most people are Crime, Education, Social
Services, Housing, Regeneration and the Environment. As a Labour councillor he will
try to make a real difference on all the issues by working with our Labour
Mayor and transforming the local community by unlocking the ideas and vision of
people within it.
