Joy is a Registered
Nurse by profession and she has been a Labour party member for 15 years and
a Councillor for 11 years representing Plaistow North. Joy has
also been a member of UNISON for over 20 years.
She was also the first black Councillor to be a Civic Ambassador and a first
citizen of Newham and held this post with dignity and integrity in and outside
the Borough. She was also awarded Freedom of the City of London.
Joy currently holds the position of Executive member for Older People and Adults
and sit in the cabinet.
She has been a Governor of numerous schools in the Borough since 1995, but
she currently sits on Curwen Primary School Governing Body, where she has also been a
chair.
In addition, Joy has been very much involved in the changes that are
happening in Newham. As a lead member in Adults she helped introduce Warm
Centres, venues that older people can go to for different activities
in winter, thereby encouraging social interaction.
During her time on the Council, Joy has worked hard to try and make a
significant difference in Newham to all the communities that she is in contact
with. Joy takes her responsibilities as a councillor very seriously, and attends
community events, meets with organisations and holds regular advice
surgeries.
Joy is married to a retired Gynaecologist and they have 5 children and 4 grandchildren. She enjoys watching soaps and entertaining in my spare time.
