I was elected to Council as a Labour candidate in 1986, representing West Ham Ward, where, with the exception of one term (Custom House 2002-2006) I have remained. I have held various positions on the Council since my election and served on four different Committees: Education, Leisure Services (Vice-Chair), Housing (Vice-Chair), North West Area Housing (Chair), Licensing (Chair). All these positions were held under the old Committee system. I was also Deputy Mayor 1988-89.
I worked for London Transport as an Electrical Fitter from 1969-1985, during which time I was very active in my Trade Union (WPTU), Shop Steward for a number of years, and Branch Chair. I was made redundant in 1985, and was then employed by the MoD, where I joined the T&GWU, until I retired in 2004.
At present I am Chair of Development Control (Planning) and Vice-Chair of Licensing Committees.
I attend as many local community meetings as possible such as Tenants Associations, to listen to concerns and work to resolve problems. I have also made contact with numerous other local organisations, and have been instrumental in obtaining funding for some, i.e. £20k for Abbey Gardens, and £30k for Vicarage Lane Estate gardens. I was also responsible for introducing the West Ham Ward Challenge Trophy, which is awarded annually to local groups for their work with and in the community.
My interests are gardening and travelling. I also have a keen interest in conservation and wildlife, and I am a member of English Heritage and the National Trust. I have been married for 49 years, have 6 children, 16 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
